Amazon brings Matter to first Echos

Amazon has started a gradual introduction of the Matter standard on its devices. As announced at the launch event in November, 17 models from the in-house Echo range have initially received a software update. According to the developer blog (link) these include:

  • Echo Dot (3rd Gen.)with Clock
  • Echo Dot (4th Gen.)
  • Echo Dot (4th Gen.) with Clock
  • Echo Dot (5th Gen)
  • Echo Dot (th Gen) with Clock
  • Echo (v3)
  • Echo (4th Gen)
  • Echo Dot (3rd Gen, 2018)
  • Echo Show 5
  • Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen, 2021)
  • Echo Show 8
  • Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen, 2021)
  • Echo Show 10 (3rd. Gen)
  • Echo Show 15
  • Echo Studio
  • Echo Flex
  • Echo Input

The devices now support Matter via WiFi, but so far only three of the product categories envisaged in version 1.0 of the standard: Lamps, sockets and switches. Other device classes are to follow in early 2023 – along with support for the Thread wireless protocol. Then the Alexa app for iOS will also get a software update. Currently, the Android version of the program is required to set up Matter products.
