Shelly 1 Gen4 installed behind a socket outlet

Shelly Gen4 with Matter now available

Announced at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, the first fourth-generation Shelly components are now available. The smart home specialist from Bulgaria offers them via its online shop on the website (link). Availability varies depending on the region. The products are already widely available in the European Union. The US shop lists them, but is currently unable to deliver. Buyers in Canada and Latin America also have to be patient at the moment.

As a multiprotocol series, “Gen4” supports three wireless standards: Bluetooth, Zigbee and Wi-Fi. The latter is also Matter-certified (“Matter over Wi-Fi”), which allows a direct connection to Matter ecosystems. Thread does not seem to be an option for Shelly – at least not at the moment.

Interestingly, the 4th generation does not appear in the CSA list of certified products (link). Only the predecessors from Gen3 are listed there. According to Shelly, this is due to a family certification. Both series have received their certificates, according to the manufacturer.

The Shelly Gen4 with Matter at a glance

Shelly 1 Gen4 is a single-channel switch with a potential-free (dry contact) option. It controls light and devices such as garden irrigation or the garage door. It is suitable for installation behind wall switches or sockets and also supports lower voltage devices. The maximum current is 16 amps (240V) / 10 A (30V).

As a relay switch, Shelly 1PM Gen4 fulfils the same purpose as the Shelly 1. The technical data is identical. However, it also measures energy consumption: the 1PM transmits data via WLAN to the Shelly app, for example, or via Zigbee to systems such as Home Assistant. What the future holds for energy management in Matter remains to be seen.

With its compact dimensions (29 × 24 × 16 mm), the Shelly 1 mini Gen4 requires very little space. The areas of application are similar to the Shelly 1, but the design requires compromises in terms of electrical performance. The mini is therefore suitable for smaller electrical appliances with a switching current of up to 8 ampere (240V) or 5 A (30V).

Shelly 1PM mini Gen4 adds power monitoring capability to the capabilities of the blue Mini. With current limits of 8A (240V AC) or 5A (30V DC), the module is suitable for lighting, fans and smaller household appliances. The free Shelly Smart Control app is available to display all data.

Shelly EM mini Gen4 is not yet available, but will soon be added to the series as a pure energy measurement module. There is no switching relay in the light gray device – but electrical loads with up to 16 ampere can be monitored (equivalent to 3840 watts at 240 volts).

Still planned: Matter updates for Gen3

While the fourth generation comes with Matter-capable firmware straight away, its predecessors are still waiting for the announced software update. Only the Shelly Plug S Gen3 adapter plug has been available since last year. But it won’t be long now: “The Gen3 devices will soon receive Matter via a firmware update,” the manufacturer announces.

Work on a Matter Bridge for older Shelly generations is continuing. However, the project is not a priority and could come at some point. “Basically, we want to wait and see whether and how Matter is used by our customers,” the company explained when asked.
