Shelly announces its first Matter-certified product. The Wi-Fi plug Shelly Plug S Gen3 is already in production and will be available soon, according to the IoT specialist from Bulgaria. It is the company’s first and, for the time being, only product to be delivered straight from the factory with Matter (link).
A Matter smart plug to start with
Before further components with the cross-manufacturer smart home standard are launched on the market, the company wants to wait for customer feedback first. Shelly products have a large fan base and offer various integration options even without Matter – from do-it-yourself projects to installation in professional KNX systems.
Technically speaking, every module in the Gen3 series (3rd generation) can receive a software update for Matter, explains the manufacturer. The internal memory has been doubled compared to its predecessors. Eight megabytes should not only enable smoother and faster operation in everyday life, but also provide sufficient space for firmware updates.
No statements on the Matter Bridge yet
Originally, the company had planned to provide the second generation series (Gen2+) with updates as well, but ultimately decided against this due to the limited memory. In order to run Matter on the components, their other functions would have had to be restricted. Shelly is now planning a Matter Bridge that will make previous series compatible – including those that used wireless protocols other than Wi-Fi. The company is not currently providing any information on the release date of this bridge. It’s likely to depend on experience with the new Matter plug as well.
