Eve launches Matter updates – for some

As announced at the Matter launch event in November, Eve System has begun shipping its software updates. The current door/window contact Eve Door & Window, the smart plug Eve Energy as well as the motion sensor Eve Motion can now receive a firmware upgrade. However, the rollout is taking place gradually and for the moment still as part of an “Early Access Program”.

Registration for the update

In other words, anyone who wants to convert their Eve products to the Matter standard registers with an e-mail address on a website on the Internet (link). Then he or she receives an invitation to install a special version of the Eve app on the iPhone using the Testflight app in iOS. Only with this latest version of the program, the firmware of Eve products can be converted to operate with Matter.

According to the manufacturer, the process can take up to 20 minutes per device and requires an iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.2. An Apple smatt home hubthat works as a Thread Border router – i.e. a HomePod mini or an Apple TV 4K (2nd/3rd generation with 128 GB) – is also required to connect the Thread products in the home network. OS version 16.2 has to be installed on this device as well.

In the future, these restrictions should disappear, but the major Matter ecosystems are not ready yet. Only Apple and SmartThings have prepared their platforms for the new standard. Amazon Alexa and Google Home have yet to update their hubs. This is probably one of the reasons why Eve has opted for a slow ramp-up with limited access.
