Video Doorbell with Matter Hub from Aqara

Aqara’s lineup of Matter-enabled smart home hubs continues to grow. The latest addition: the Doorbell Camera Hub G410 – a DIY video doorbell with a twist. Housed in a slim casing, it offers 2K video recording and doubles as a smart home hub for Aqara’s Zigbee devices and Matter-compatible products from other brands. It’s another clear sign of the company’s ongoing commitment to broad Matter support.

Matter Controller and Bridge in One Device

The G410 is designed to handle a wide range of use cases involving Matter products or ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings:

  • Matter Bridge: Like Aqara’s other hubs, the G410 acts as a bridge between non-Matter Aqara devices and the Matter ecosystem. It brings Zigbee-based components into third-party Matter systems, allowing them to be controlled there (see: “What is a Matter Bridge?“). A unique feature here is Aqara’s proprietary Advanced Matter Bridging. It allows capabilities not defined in the official Matter spec to be exposed as virtual switches or sensors. For example, the G410 can use its AI-based facial recognition as a trigger in Matter-based platforms: when the doorbell detects a recognized face, it sends a predefined signal to the connected system.
  • Matter Controller: With a built-in controller, the G410 can also serve as the core of an entire Matter setup. It can onboard and control Matter-enabled devices from any brand (see: “What is a Matter Controller?“). According to Aqara, more than 50 device types are supported – including locks, sensors, lights, robot vacuums, home appliances, and even EV chargers, which are now part of the Matter 1.3 spec. Together with platforms like Home Assistant and SmartThings, Aqara is becoming a key player in the practical rollout of the Matter standard.
  • Thread Border Router: To truly control all types of Matter devices, Aqara has once again integrated a Border Router. As in the Hub M3, it establishes a connection to products that use the Thread wireless protocol. Without a border router, such “Matter over Thread” devices do not work (see also: “What is a Thread Border Router?“). On platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, or Google Home, this function is often merged with the smart home hub or a smart speaker. Aqara is now taking the same approach with its newer hubs. With the G410, the border router function is housed in the supplied chime, which is likely due to reliability and stability considerations. Firstly, the external chime is located inside the house and therefore closer to other devices. Secondly, it is constantly connected to the power supply via a USB cable.

The G410 is Packed with Features

While the G410 video doorbell isn’t (yet) recognized as a Matter camera – that category is still in development and likely to arrive with Matter 1.5 – the device is packed with functionality. Alongside local AI-based facial recognition, it supports video integration with all major smart home platforms: Apple (HomeKit Secure Video), Alexa, Google, and SmartThings.

For other platforms like Home Assistant, the doorbell supports RTSP video streaming. It also comes with a wired chime that includes local storage via microSD card – up to 512 GB. Users can also back up recordings to a NAS or to Aqara’s cloud. The unit can operate wirelessly on six AA batteries for up to five months, or be connected to a low-voltage wired power supply for continuous operation.
