UniFi Gets Its Own Thread Border Router

The adoption of the Thread radio protocol still leaves room for improvement in both residential and professional installations. While Wi-Fi is nearly ubiquitous, comparatively few networks include the Border Router required for Thread. A well-known networking manufacturer now aims to change that: Ubiquiti (link) has announced support on its UniFi platform. The upcoming SuperLink Gateway HA (link) is set to include a Thread Border Router. That would make Thread an integral part of one of the most widely used network infrastructures in the semi-professional and professional sectors.

No Native Matter Support

To avoid raising unrealistic expectations: Ubiquiti is not becoming a Matter platform. So far, the company has made no mention of native Matter support – for example, through a Matter Controller built into the UniFi Network am. It also remains unclear how the built-in Border Router will integrate with the UniFi software or whether it will allow Thread devices from other ecosystems – such as Matter, HomeKit, Google Home, or SmartThings – to be commissioned.

The announced support is limited to the network layer. UniFi already relies on technologies that Matter builds upon and that are required for device discovery. In practice, however, technologies such as mDNS and multicast must be configured correctly to ensure reliable communication. Restrictive settings – for example, those limiting routing between so-called VLANs – can disrupt traffic. A Border Router integrated into the UniFi ecosystem could help reduce such issues in the future.

The SuperLink Gateway HA adds Thread support to UniFi networks. At the same time, it expands the functionality of the company’s proprietary SuperLink wireless technology. Ubiquiti introduced SuperLink in January 2025 as a proprietary solution for alarm and security sensors within UniFi Protect. SuperLink operates in the sub-GHz spectrum (915.6–927.6 MHz in the United States and 865.1–869.5 MHz in the European Union) and, according to the manufacturer, offers a range of several kilometers while providing good penetration through walls and other obstacles. The protocol is used by motion, door, and glass-break sensors, smoke and CO detectors, environmental sensors, as well as relay and siren modules – all of which can be integrated through the UniFi OS interface.

The new gateway succeeds the original SuperLink Gateway introduced in 2025 and adds three major new features:

  • A built-in battery (11.8 Wh) providing approximately 2.2 hours of backup power during outages
  • An LTE module for cellular failover if the internet connection goes down
  • A Thread Border Router supporting up to 128 connected devices

According to the specifications, the Bluetooth functionality found in the previous model has been removed. It had been used to connect first-generation UniFi Protect BLE sensors. From a technical standpoint, the gateway therefore remains primarily a SuperLink device for UniFi security sensors. The Thread radio is an additional feature. It may also indicate that Thread is set to replace Bluetooth within the UniFi ecosystem.

What This Means for Thread

It remains to be seen whether the gateway will serve only as infrastructure for future SuperLink/Thread sensors from Ubiquiti or whether it can function as a fully featured, vendor-independent Thread Border Router in the context of Matter. Even so, the announcement is significant. It marks the official arrival of Thread in a networking product line widely used by professionals and advanced users around the world. If Ubiquiti ultimately opens its Border Router to third-party devices, it could expand the role of Thread in a market segment that has so far been dominated by consumer hubs such as Apple TV, Google Nest, and Amazon Echo.
