SmartWings: Roller shades with Matter over Ethernet

So far, Matter-enabled roller shades have used two ways to connect to the smart home: “Matter over WiFi” and “Matter over Thread”. Both are wireless solutions that normally require a battery for the drive. US provider SmartWings (link) is now adding a third option: products with “Matter over Ethernet”. As envisaged in the smart home standard, they receive their commands via Ethernet cable. However, the connecting wire – a CAT 5e or CAT 6 cable – also transports electricity. Power over Ethernet, or PoE for short, is the name of this method, which also supplies IP cameras, internet phones (VoIP) or Wi-Fi access points with power.

A network switch with PoE functionality, which supplies power as well as data, is required. Models with at least 3 watts of output power per connection should normally be sufficient, explains the manufacturer. A maximum cable length of 328 feet or 100 meters to the switch is specified. The PoE drive variant with Matter over Ethernet can be selected in the configurator when ordering. It is available for hard-wired Roller Shades, Zebra Shades, Woven Wood Shades, Outdoor Shades, Dual Shades and Roman Shades from SmartThings.
