Siegenia has released a successor to its Matter-enabled window handle. Unlike the first model introduced in 2024, the Smart Window Handle 2nd Generation (link) is now certified for Matter 1.3. The predecessor was released with Matter 1.0 and will no longer receive software updates. The German specialist for hardware, ventilation, and building technology is focusing on the new model.
Lockable Handle for Windows and Balcony Doors
The smart handle is designed as a retrofit solution for casement windows made of wood or plastic. It replaces the standard handle and can be locked or unlocked remotely. Functionally, it corresponds to a lockable lever with a key – commonly used for burglary protection or as a safety measure in homes with small children.
Also built in: a sensor that detects the handle position and determines whether the window is “open” or “closed.” Both functions are transmitted wirelessly via the Thread protocol (Matter over Thread). An online compatibility list names smart home systems that have been successfully tested with the handle (link). Since the Matter standard does not yet include a dedicated device type for window handles, Siegenia uses a workaround: the functions are exported separately – as a door lock (smart lock) and as a contact sensor.

In most systems, the “tilt” position of a window is not displayed. This intermediate position, typical of European tilt-and-turn windows, is not supported by Matter contact sensors, which only distinguish between open and closed. The manufacturer’s iOS app (link), however, does show the tilt position – and even registers handle vibrations. This demonstrates that the window handle’s capabilities go beyond what Matter ecosystems currently support. Nevertheless, its features are sufficient to trigger typical automations – for example, turning down the radiator when airing a room or switching on balcony or terrace lights automatically when the door opens at night.
Power is supplied by two AAA batteries. The window handle is available in white or anthracite through Amazon and the manufacturer’s online store (link).
Improvements Over the First Siegenia Handle
The 2024 model received some positive YouTube reviews in Germany, but Amazon ratings were mixed. Some users reported connection drops and handles that could only be re-added after a factory reset – an issue many early Thread product makers faced, likely related to Matter version 1.0. According to Siegenia, this problem has been resolved in the 2nd generation.
Handles from the first generation that contained faulty firmware were updated once and are now fully functional, the company explains. However, further software support for the original model has ended. No more updates will be provided, as Siegenia’s IT support is now focused on the second generation. Besides software refinements, the new model reportedly includes additional improvements, such as enhanced accuracy in open/close detection and optimized handle mechanics.
