Room thermostats with Matter from Eberle Controls

If you are looking to control your heating with a Matter-enabled thermostat, you have little choice so far. The Early Access Program for the Eve Thermo has just started, some models of the nest thermostat from Google have received a software update, others have not. That’s why Eberle Controls from Nuremberg is now getting undivided attention: the German heating specialist has added two new flush-mounted thermostats to its range that support the Matter smart home standard (link).

  • The UTE 3500 is designed for water-bearing systems such as conventional underfloor heating. Its triac output can control up to five actuators of 3 watts each.
  • The UTE 3800-U is suitable for electric heating systems and water-bearing installations that can be controlled via a relay.

Both fit into a flush-mounted installation box and can replace traditional controllers. Thanks to the automatic heating/cooling function, they are also suitable for operation with a heat pump. The dot matrix display on the front shows the temperature, while three sensor buttons allow manual settings. Without a Matter platform, the devices work like normal, unconnected wall thermostats.

The installer fits the flush-mounted insert in an in-wall box. The top unit with control logic is adapted to the European switch format (55 × 55 mm) and its cover is available in the standard colors RAL 9010 (pure white) and RAL 9016 (traffic white). Installers do not need Wi-Fi or access to the smart home installation for commissioning. They make all the necessary basic settings directly on the device using a program button.

Matter over Wi-Fi

Integration into Matter plattforms then takes place as usual via QR code. The Matter controller used is then also responsible for the range of functions. It decides which automation options are available and what the rules for this are. This is where Amazon, Apple, Google & Co. sometimes differ significantly.

As Eberle uses the home Wi-Fi for wireless connection to the smart home, there is a large selection of possible controllers. For example, all Echo models from Amazon are suitable, even those that do not have an integrated Thread Border Router. In addition to current Apple products, the first-generation HomePod or Apple TV are also suitable, while Google’s early smart speakers such as Google Home or Nest mini can be used as well.

This positions Eberle Controls as a Matter pioneer. The company has been existing for over 90 years and produces devices for temperature regulation, air conditioning and control in buildings at its headquarters in Nuremberg. All the 560 or so products in the range are “Made in Germany” or, more precisely, “Made in Franconia”, as the manufacturer calls it.
