The Japanese company Disign Incorporated (link) got an unusual product certified for Matter. According to the official CSA directory (link), Smartwiz+ Art is a digital picture frame that can show push notifications in addition to photos.
The notification function was introduced with Matter 1.3 as an extension of Matter Casting. It allows certified devices to send messages to displays in the smart home. Household appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines can use it to let you know when their program is finished. Warning messages or notifications about software updates – the areas of application are diverse. In such cases, the Smartwiz picture frame can serve as a receiver to display notifications from the smart home network.
Display with Integrated Thread Border Router
The screen has an energy-saving e-paper display (EPD) with electronic ink that also displays colors. It is designed for both wall mounting and tabletop use on a stand. Power is supplied by an integrated battery (3000mAh), which is charged via a USB-C cable.
A special feature is the integrated Thread Border Router. It makes smart home products with the Thread radio protocol available for Matter systems or can serve as a backup should the router in a Matter Controller such as the Google Nest Hub or Apple HomePod ever fail. Both the Thread implementation (1.4) and Matter support (1.4) are up to date with the latest versions.
However, the Smartwiz+ Art does not have its own controller functions. It cannot be used to control Matter devices via its screen. For this purpose, Disign has a smart mirror with a touchscreen – the Smartwiz+ Mirror – available (link).
Developed in Japan, Built in Taiwan
Disign Incorporated specializes in screens for special applications. The company develops LCD displays for industrial use in transportation such as buses, trains, and cars. Its product range also includes e-paper screens with high contrast and low energy consumption. The Japanese supplier develops its products at its headquarters in Yokohama and has them manufactured in Taiwan.
The company has hardly made an appearance with products for end consumers to date. The only exception is the aforementioned Smartwiz+ Mirror. As a wall display with an integrated touchscreen, the Matter Controller is currently sold in the US on Amazon.
