The electronics giant behind SmartThings doesn’t always make a big deal about its progress. As a result, many Samsung devices already ship with an integrated Thread Border Router – but the company hasn’t made this public. There’s no mention of the Thread wireless protocol in technical specifications or on product pages.
A reader pointed out to me some time ago that his Samsung TV appears as an OpenThread Border Router in his home network (picture below). Apps such as Discovery or Flame can scan the home locally for such services. According to him, Samsung Support confirmed that TV models with a built-in SmartThings Hub starting with the 2022 model year also support Matter over Thread. That means an external hub like the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 may be unnecessary in many cases – since Thread devices such as smart plugs or sensors can connect directly to the Matter Controller in the TV without any additional hardware.
Which Samsung products support Matter over Thread?
That raised the question: which other product groups does this apply to? Only Samsung TVs and soundbars that are listed in the Thread Group’s official directory (link) as certified since 2024? Or also other product categories – like Samsung refrigerators or computer monitors – that include a built-in Matter Controller? As seen at IFA 2025, Samsung continues to push this development forward.
Because of the sheer number of product variants and regional models, the company couldn’t provide an immediate answer. Internal reviews and coordination were needed. But now the first results are available: Samsung has updated and expanded its April 2025 blog post. Models such as the Samsung Music Frame and certain Smart Monitors from 2024 have been removed, while more refrigerators with 9-inch displays, as well as washer-dryer combinations, have been added.
The official list (link) now includes only devices with the full feature set. Quote: “These products are all supported with Matter (Thread/WiFi), Thread Border Router, and Zigbee.” Those interested in the original overview, which also included SmartThings hubs without an integrated Border Router, can find that list documented in this article.
