Professional Installations with Matter from Philips Dynalite

Philips Dynalite has announced a Matter Bridge for its professional building installations. It will be added as a new feature to the PDTS control panel – a wall-mounted touchscreen (link) that manages the Australian provider’s systems. According to the company, the current hardware version of the Philips Dynalite Touch Screen (PDTS v2) is already prepared for the cross-vendor smart home standard, with the corresponding software update in development.

The company is also planning a software update for its third-generation Supervisor Gateway (PDDEG-S v3), which will likewise become a bridge. The Ethernet gateway can be used together with the PDTS or on its own, for example in installations that rely on sensors and wall switches. The Matter Bridge connects the manufacturer’s DyNet building networks with ecosystems such as Apple Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant, enabling control from those platforms – including voice commands via the respective digital assistants.

Who Is Philips Dynalite?

Philips Dynalite is an Australian company specializing in lighting control and building automation. With more than 35,000 completed projects worldwide, it is among the leading providers of connected lighting systems. Dynalite was founded in 1987 in Sydney by John Gunton, who also developed the proprietary communication protocol DyNet, which remains the technical backbone of its installations today.

In 2009, Philips Lighting acquired the company, which is still reflected in the company name “Philips Dynalite” today. In 2018, Philips spun off its lighting division, creating the Dutch public company Signify N.V. Since then, Philips Dynalite has been part of the Signify Group, which also includes brands such as Hue, Cooper, and Telensa (link). The Philips name continues under a licensing agreement.

Which Products Does the Matter Bridge Support?

The DyNet system is highly scalable, capable of managing nearly any number of devices – from single-family homes to university campuses. It supports common lighting standards such as DALI-2, 0-10V, phase control, PWM, and DMX, and can also integrate other building systems such as heating, ventilation, or shading. The bridge therefore connects not only lighting but also lights, fans, blinds/curtains, temperature, and humidity reporting with Matter systems.

Contact with these platforms is established via the PDTS Ethernet interface. In addition to a power supply for the panel, at least one load controller is required for operation. Such units in the Dynalite system receive commands from the DyNet network and adjust their controlled outputs accordingly. They contain all the elements necessary for operating their lighting groups, from the power supply, network connections, and output drivers to the microprocessor control. There are load controllers for different luminaire types, channel capacities, and installation situations, such as for wall or DIN rail mounting.
