The lighting specialist Ledvance has launched its first Matter-compatible LED products on the market. As the German subsidiary in Garching near Munich reports, 10 lamps in various sizes and designs are now available – including candle-shaped models, spotlights with GU-10 bases and filament lamps. All provide colored light in more than 16 million shades and tunable white with a color temperature of 2700 Kelvin to 6500 Kelvin (link).
Connection to the smart home via Wi-Fi
“Matter over Wi-Fi” is used as the connection technology for the products. This means that the lamps themselves establish contact with the home network via Wi-Fi. A Border Border, as in the case of Thread, or a Matter Bridge, as required with Zigbee products, is not necessary. Ledvance supplies the typical QR code for setting up Matter products. This makes it easy to add the light source to a Matter ecosystem such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home or SmartThings from Samsung. The respective platform with its smartphone app and voice assistant takes over control in these cases.

Alternatively, Ledvance offers the setup via its own Smart+ app. According to the manufacturer, the software for Android or iOS can set up a Matter smart home itself and add products to it. This makes it possible to commission and operate lamps without a hub from Apple, Google & Co. However, to control the lights later with the aforementioned systems, a share for the respective platform is required. The new Matter family from Ledvance is now available in retail stores, from online providers such as Amazon and in the manufacturer’s own web store. The range is to be continuously expanded, including with LED light strips and smart sockets.
