Warema Expands Sun Shading with Matter over Thread

With the Warema Group (link), an important provider of shading solutions is adopting the Matter standard. The German family-owned company describes itself as the European market leader in high-quality technical sun shading systems. Its product range includes awnings, roller shutters, venetian blinds, patio roofs, and plastic components for the automotive industry, medical technology, machinery, and tools.

The New Xeenos Go Product Line

Warema has already showcased its Matter-enabled product line at Light + Building 2024 and other trade fairs. Now, the first two products have received official certification: the in-wall Xeenos Go Actuator roller shutter (link) and its colleague Xeenos Go Actuator venetian blind (link).

“The market launch is underway and both products can be ordered,” says Stefan Ruf, Product Manager for Smart Home Wireless Solutions at Warema. “They are distributed through traditional specialist and wholesale channels. By Light + Building 2026 in March, they should also appear in various online shops operated by our sun-shading partners.” A collaboration is also planned with Smattex, a retailer specializing in Matter products that also sells to end customers.

Simple Installation Without a Warema App

No manufacturer app is needed for installation. The actuators are mounted in a standard in-wall box, connected to the roller shutter or blind motor, and commissioned using the app of the chosen Matter ecosystem. They determine the start and end points themselves: “We’ve integrated automatic travel-time detection via power monitoring,” Ruf explains. “After a few movements, the actuator learns the travel times and adjusts both end positions so that the in-app visualization matches the actual position. Unlike some competing products, the device is ready to use right away and calibrates in the background – without requiring a reference run from the customer.”

Connectivity within the smart home is based on the Thread radio protocol, with a Border Router such as the Apple HomePod mini or Amazon’s Echo Dot Max serving as an intermediary. Many Samsung devices are also already equipped with the necessary functionality. In our market overview of Matter-compatible devices, Thread Border Routers can be displayed via a checkbox at the top of the table.

This installation approach is still relatively new for professional installers, and Warema is aware of that: “The Thread Border Router and the dependency on an existing Matter ecosystem change the familiar workflow with handheld transmitters,” says Ruf. As an early adopter in the sun shading sector, some hesitation is to be expected. At the same time, the feedback clearly shows “that customers are enthusiastic about the simple and fast commissioning through the apps they already know.”

Warema’s focus on the Matter standard for the products continues in the company’s update strategy. Future software updates for Xeenos actuators will be delivered directly via Matter ecosystems and the CSA’s Distributed Compliance Ledger. Here, too, no app from the manufacturer is required. According to the product manager, the chip built into the device is dimensioned larger than many others on the market and offers sufficient reserves for multiple updates.

More Xeenos Products in the Pipeline

The flush-mounted actuators for roller shutters and blinds with adjustable slats will soon be followed by further Xeenos products (link). A two-channel lighting actuator is in development and scheduled for release in April 2026. For May, two additional roller shutter and blind actuators are planned– plug-in variants designed for outdoor use. Equipped with multi-pin connectors (STAK3/STAS3), they can be integrated directly into the 230-volt supply line of the shading motor, making them ideal for quick and easy retrofitting of existing installations.
