That was fast: Samsung Electronics has announced that its smart home platform now supports Matter 1.5. With this move, the company continues its strategy of rapid implementation, introducing the specification to the market just one month after its official release.
In a company press release (link), Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of the SmartThings Team, emphasizes the approach: “We will continue to expand our support for industry standards, including Matter, and further strengthen collaboration to drive new customer experiences.”
Matter-Enabled Cameras Move Closer to Market
Matter 1.5 was released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in November and introduces camera support to the standard, including indoor and outdoor security cameras as well as video doorbells. According to Samsung, supported features include live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event history, and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) controls. In addition, the update adds new capabilities for so-called closure devices such as blinds, awnings, and garage doors, while also improving energy management.
This support clears the way for camera vendors planning to launch the first Matter-enabled models. According to the press release, Samsung has worked with manufacturers such as Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam to enable seamless integration with SmartThings. On top of that, Samsung clarifies their product announcements from November: “These products are expected to roll out starting in March 2026,” the text states.
Required Software Already Rolling Out
Additional details come from a post in Samsung’s German online forum (link). The post refers to a new firmware version for external SmartThings hubs (0.59.8), which is being rolled out in two waves. Newer hubs are reported to have already received the update. Between December 8 and December 12, 2025, the following devices were updated:
- Samsung SmartThings Hub 2018 (V3)
- Aeotec Smart Home Hub
- Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2
In the period from 12 to 16 January 2025, the control center without a Thread Border Router will receive its new firmware:
- Samsung SmartThings Hub 2015 (V2)
The software update is installed automatically. The SmartThings hub downloads the firmware, restarts briefly, and is typically back online within about a minute. As a result, most users are unlikely to notice the process. Whether a hub has already been updated to Matter 1.5 can be checked via the firmware version listed in the settings.
