Retrofit smart locks are practical, but not for everyone: aesthetes who care about design are bothered by the attached motor block. And batteries that need to be replaced or recharged often run out at the most inconvenient times. That’s why Nuki (link) has come up with a solution: the Austrian smart lock specialist from Graz has developed a module that makes new doors with electromechanical door locks smart – invisible and maintenance-free.
Nuki Smart Module for Access Control
The Nuki Smart Module is designed for factory installation in doors with a hardwired lock drive and their own power supply. It is integrated into the door leaf together with the locking technology from the door manufacturer and offers the usual Nuki feature set: remote access, digital key management, auto-unlock, and more. The permanent power supply via the door frame eliminates the need for battery replacement.

In terms of functionality, the module is said to correspond to the current fifth generation of Nuki with Smart Lock Pro, Smart Lock Ultra, and Smart Lock Go. Among other things, this means native Matter support. The door lock can be integrated into many smart home solutions – from Apple Home to Home Assistant to Samsung SmartThings – via the cross-manufacturer smart home standard. The technology is also compatible with the recently announced Nuki Keypad 2.0 NFC. It grants access via PIN code, fingerprint, and NFC-based “tap to unlock,” for example, by simply touching the keypad with a smartphone. And it will support the cross-manufacturer Aliro standard, an industry initiative aimed at standardizing digital keys.

First Showcase with Door Manufacturer Rehau
The Smart Module will make its debut at Fensterbau Frontale 2026 in Nuremberg (March 24 to 27), the world’s largest trade fair for window, door, and facade construction. Rehau Window Solutions (link) and Nuki will present it at their booths there. The official sales launch is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
