Berlin-based network specialist Fritz (formerly known as AVM) is bringing Matter to its first router model. The FritzBox 5690 Pro will soon receive beta software that supports the cross-manufacturer standard. It transforms the combination router for DSL and fiber optic connections into a Matter Bridge. This means that smart home products registered with the FritzBox will soon be forwarded via Matter to platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, or Google Home. Until now, this has required the FritzSmart Gateway, an additional device for the power outlet that connects Zigbee and Dect-ULE products to FritzBox routers.

Matter Bridge Integrated into the Router
The two top models in the FritzBox range – 5690 Pro and 7690 – do essentially not require a gateway. They have integrated Dect and Zigbee as wireless standards and can serve as a smart home hub without any additional accessories. The new beta software now also adds Matter, making the gateway unnecessary.
Initially, it will only be available for the FritzBox 5690 Pro. The 7690 is not mentioned at all in the manufacturer’s announcement (link), but is likely to follow at a later date. Experience has shown that Fritz rolls out its updates in waves to the various models. The update is expected to be available “soon” and can be downloaded via the FritzLabor (link). Here, the manufacturer provides pre-release versions of its software for download. As always, malfunctions cannot be completely ruled out at this stage. Fritz also points this out in the terms of use for FritzLabor.
