A motorized lock drive, also known as a smart lock, is among the most convenient features in a smart home. An increasing number of models now support the Matter standard, allowing integration with smart home platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. The list below provides an overview of available products that, according to the manufacturers, are Matter-compatible. New announcements can also be found in our overview of Matter-compatible devices.
Smart Locks for Latch-and-Deadbolt Locks (Europe)
In continental and northern Europe, doors typically use mortise locks that combine two locking elements in a single housing: a latch and a deadbolt. The latch is a beveled, spring-loaded tongue that automatically clicks into the strike plate when the door is closed. This keeps the door shut without locking it. By pressing the door handle or turning a knob, it can be opened at any time.

Only when the deadbolt – a solid bolt – is extended does the door become truly locked. The deadbolt secures the door against forced entry. The key operates both parts: it moves the deadbolt and retracts the latch when turned beyond its usual stop. For this reason, many smart locks designed for the European market recognize multiple states: not only “locked” and “unlocked,” but also “unlatched.”
Since Matter 1.2, this distinction has been included in the standard. In practice, availability depends on both the smart lock and the Matter platform supporting the relevant specifications.

Smart Locks for Deadbolt Locks (U.S., Canada, U.K. …)
In Anglo-American countries, deadbolt locks are widespread. Their solid bolt is moved by turning a key. Deadbolts do not lock automatically and often have no spring mechanism. The door therefore remains freely movable when unlocked. To hold it in place, many doors also use a latch lock (comparable to the European latch). This latch is separate from the deadbolt, which means the smart lock has no effect on it. The motor only operates the deadbolt, with just two states: “locked” and “unlocked.”
