External hubs for the SmartThings ecosystem are receiving a software update designed to improve the setup and operation of Thread networks. The update brings the hub in line with the latest version (1.4) of the Thread wireless protocol, adopted in September 2024 (link).
A key innovation in Thread 1.4 is the technical foundation for exchanging so-called Thread Credentials. These are the access credentials a new smart home device needs to join an existing Thread network.
Credential Sharing with Samsung SmartThings
When Matter first launched three years ago, the process for credential exchange was not fully defined. This led to one of the biggest construction sites in the standard: The Thread Border Routers from different manufacturers couldn’t talk to each other. Instead of forming a shared Thread network, they sometimes spun up separate and parallel mesh networks. Workarounds via smartphone operating systems helped bridge the gap in some cases. This allowed platforms like Apple Home, Aqara Home, and Home Assistant to merge their Border Routers into a single radio network.

But this approach never worked with Samsung SmartThings hubs. Their built-in Border Router always created its own standalone Thread mesh (see image above). That’s exactly what the new firmware version 0.58.10 is designed to change. According to a post in the SmartThings Community (link), the rollout begins worldwide on September 22, 2025. The software will be available for the last four hub models:
- Samsung SmartThings Hub v2 (without Thread, 2015)
- Samsung SmartThings Hub v3 (with Border Router, 2018)
- Aeotec Smart Home Hub (with Border Router, 2020)
- Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 (with Border Router, 2025)
The update will be delivered in waves and is scheduled to be completed by October 1, 2025. After download, the hub will automatically restart and install the firmware. The temporary network disconnect is expected to take no longer than one minute.
After the Update: Thread Network Selectable in the App
The SmartThings app is also being updated. After installing version 1.8.37 (Android) or 1.7.37 (iOS), users will have the option of linking their hub with an existing Thread network. The new menu, found in the hub’s settings, is called Manage Thread Network and will display available networks for selection.
