The transition of Home Assistant’s Matter integration to a different software library has begun. In November 2025, the Open Home Foundation announced that the smart home platform would receive a new Matter server. The corresponding Matter add-on (link) will no longer be based on Python but on matter.js. The new architecture is intended to make development easier for open-source contributors and accelerate progress.

Add-On 8.2.0 Can Be Switched to matter.js
As of today, the Matter Server version 8.2.0 is available for download. It includes the alternative JavaScript-based framework. After installation, it is initially inactive and must be enabled in the add-on settings. The relevant menu option is labeled “Use the latest beta version.”

The first startup may take a bit longer, as data from installed Matter devices is first migrated to the new format. “After that, the server starts faster because we work more efficiently than the previous Python server, for example by storing the last IP address of devices. This means only data that has actually changed needs to be reloaded,” explains Ingo Fischer, who is responsible for the project at the Open Home Foundation.
The goal is to have an automatic migration in the first step and to offer the same range of functions as the previous Python server, according to Fischer. However, work will continue on the server, and new features will be added to fully support Matter. If problems arise during beta operation, the switch can be reversed at any time: after deactivating the beta version, the old server will be back. As always in such cases, it is advisable to make a backup before experimenting. Users can also provide feedback to the developers via the add-on’s GitHub page (link).
